Xi’an Airport T5 to Bell Tower After Midnight: Night Bus, Taxi, DiDi & Late-Night Safety Tips

Landing at Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) after midnight and staying near the Bell Tower? You have three practical ways to reach your hotel: a late-night airport shuttle bus, an official metered taxi, or a ride booked through DiDi. The airport shuttle is usually the cheapest choice for solo travelers, while a taxi or ride-hailing car may be easier if you have large suitcases or arrive with family.

The airport is around 37 km (23 miles) from the Bell Tower area, according to the airport’s own distance guide. At midnight, the metro is no longer a realistic option for reaching central Xi’an: the regular last Line 14 train from T5 toward the city leaves at around 10:24 p.m. Your flight’s landing time is not the same as the moment you’ll be ready to leave arrivals, either. Immigration, baggage collection, and finding transport can all take time.

Xi’an’s Bell Tower (钟楼) is an especially convenient base for a first visit. Many hotels, restaurants, and old-city attractions are within reach. If you’re still choosing a hotel, read our guide to staying near the Bell Tower, Yongning Gate, or Giant Wild Goose Pagoda.

What I wouldn’t do is follow someone who approaches me in the arrivals hall offering a private ride. Use the signed airport bus counter, official taxi queue, or designated ride-hailing pickup area instead. Below is exactly how I’d approach a late-night arrival as a Chinese traveler helping a friend who doesn’t speak Mandarin.

Quick Answer: What’s the Best Way from Terminal 5 to the Bell Tower at Night?

Option Estimated cost Travel time after boarding Where to go at T5 Best for
Airport night bus Around ¥25 per person About 60–90 minutes Follow 机场巴士 / Airport Bus signs; confirm the city-bound boarding point Solo travelers, light luggage, lowest cost
Official taxi Roughly ¥120–160 per car, sometimes more About 40–70 minutes B1, outside Door 501, official taxi queue Couples, families, heavy luggage
DiDi / ride-hailing Roughly ¥110–180 per car, variable About 40–70 minutes P5A parking building, B1, ride-hailing pickup zone Visitors who prefer an app and visible trip details

These are planning estimates, not fixed quotes. Bus schedules and pickup locations can change; taxi fares depend on the meter, vehicle registration, route and tolls; ride-hailing prices depend on the live booking.

My rule of thumb: Traveling alone with one suitcase? Check the night bus first. Traveling with two or three people and tired after a long flight? Compare a metered taxi and DiDi. If your phone is offline, the official taxi queue is usually the easiest backup.

1. The Airport Night Bus: Cheapest for Solo Travelers

Interior of Xi’an Xianyang International Airport Terminal 5

Xi’an Xianyang International Airport operates late-night buses, often referred to in Chinese as 守航夜宵线 (shouhang yexiao xian). They serve passengers arriving after the metro has stopped, with stops in central Xi’an including the Bell Tower area.

A typical single ticket is about ¥25 per person. You can usually buy it through the airport’s designated ticket channels; ask staff whether cash or an overseas-card-linked Alipay/WeChat account is accepted at the counter or machine you are using. Don’t assume every self-service machine accepts a foreign passport number or international card. If the machine asks for a Chinese resident ID, seek help at the staffed counter instead.

Which bus goes toward the Bell Tower?

This is the part I would double-check before leaving the terminal.

Night Bus Line 1 — late evening until around 1:00 a.m.

A September 2026 route listing describes Line 1 operating approximately 10:00 p.m.–1:00 a.m. It travels via the western side of the city before reaching the Bell Tower / Bell Tower Hotel area, then continues toward Xi’an Hotel and the Provincial Stadium area.

The published route includes stops such as Chengxi Coach Station (城西客运站), Kaiyuanmen (开远门), Xishaomen (西稍门), Andingmen (安定门), West Street (西大街), and Bell Tower (钟楼).

Night Bus Line 3 — from around 1:00 a.m. until the last arriving flights

The more recent 2026 listings identify Night Bus Line 3 (守航夜宵3号线) as the after-1:00-a.m. service through Fengcheng 9th Road, City Sports Park, Xi’an Library, Longshoucun, and Bell Tower, continuing toward Xi’an Hotel and southern stops.

Important numbering warning: Some older airport webpages still call a broadly similar post-1:00-a.m. route Night Bus Line 5, while newer schedules call it Line 3. This is a genuine inconsistency between published sources, not something you should be expected to solve at 2 a.m. Confirm “钟楼” (Bell Tower) on the destination board or with an official staff member before you pay or board.

For arrivals shortly before 1:00 a.m., there may also be a separate Night Bus Line 2 serving the Bell Tower area; the actual operating routes and timetable on your travel date are what matter.

Where do you board the bus at T5?

After collecting your luggage, follow signs for 机场巴士 / Airport Bus and ask at the official bus counter or transport information desk for the current Bell Tower-bound night service.

Do not rely on “Door 512” alone. The airport’s own website explicitly lists Door 512 at T5 as a pickup location for the free inter-terminal shuttle between T2, T3 and T5. That does not establish it as the boarding point for your bus into downtown Xi’an. The city-bound night bus pickup may be organized separately. Check the on-site signs and the staff’s instructions.

You can show this Chinese sentence to staff:

请问去钟楼的守航夜宵机场大巴在哪里乘坐?
Where do I catch the late-night airport bus to the Bell Tower?

How long will the bus take?

Allow around 60–90 minutes after departure, perhaps longer if there are multiple terminal pickups, additional stops, or a wait before leaving. Departure intervals may be around 20–40 minutes rather than a strict hourly timetable. Don’t book an onward appointment based on a guaranteed bus arrival time.

The bus makes designated stops, not hotel-door drop-offs. Ask which Bell Tower stop is closest to your hotel. The west-side and north-side approaches can be more convenient for different blocks; check your specific hotel’s location, not only its distance from the Bell Tower on a map.

Who should take it? Solo visitors, travelers packing light, and anyone happy to save money in exchange for a longer journey and a short walk to the hotel. If the bus stop is far from your hotel or the weather is cold, a short licensed taxi ride from the drop-off may be worth the extra cost.

One practical tip about your arrival time

If your flight lands at 12:40 a.m., don’t assume you can catch a bus whose listed service ends at 1:00 a.m. You may still be waiting for your luggage. Ask about the next actual departure and the final city-bound service instead.

2. Official Metered Taxi: Best for Heavy Luggage and Late Check-In

Taxis at Xi’an Xianyang International Airport

For many first-time international visitors, an official taxi is the least complicated way to get from the airport to a hotel in the old city after midnight.

Where is the official T5 taxi rank?

The airport’s published guide lists the T5 taxi pickup at Basement Level 1 (B1), outside Door 501. Follow signs marked 出租车 / Taxi to the managed queue. You should see normal licensed taxis and a controlled passenger pickup process.

Don’t accept an unsolicited private-car offer inside the arrivals hall or from someone directing you away from the official queue.

How much should a metered taxi cost?

For the airport-to-Bell-Tower journey, I would budget approximately ¥120–160 per car at night, with the understanding that a longer route, different vehicle category, waiting time, or traffic may push the total above that range.

The airport publishes different tariffs for taxis registered in Xi’an (陕A / 陕U) and Xianyang (陕D). For a typical smaller Xi’an-registered taxi, the published standard is:

  • Daytime starting fare: ¥8.50 for the first 3 km.
  • Nighttime starting fare: ¥9.50, during approximately 11:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m.
  • Base distance fare: around ¥2 per km, with a published nighttime supplement of ¥0.30 per km.
  • Long-trip empty-return surcharge: may apply after the published distance threshold, and legitimate road tolls are additional.

This is not a do-it-yourself price formula for every airport taxi. The meter applies the vehicle’s actual permitted tariff. For example, Xianyang-registered taxis can have different starting distances and per-kilometer rates.

A driver may legitimately charge a road toll in addition to the meter, but a supposed flat “late-night service fee” or “per-suitcase fee” should not be accepted without an official tariff basis.

How long does it take?

The drive is often around 40–70 minutes late at night, but the airport queue, construction, weather and your hotel’s exact location can all affect the total door-to-door journey.

How to use an airport taxi safely

  1. Join the official queue at T5 B1, Door 501.
  2. Show the driver your hotel’s full Chinese name and street address, not just “Bell Tower.”
  3. Confirm that the taximeter is operating correctly.
  4. Ask the driver to follow a legal, sensible route; toll roads may be faster, but clarify toll charges.
  5. Pay the amount due and request a printed receipt (发票 / fapiao).

Save the receipt. It may contain the information needed if you leave something in the vehicle or have a fare dispute.

3. DiDi and Other Ride-Hailing Cars: Useful if Your Phone Is Ready

If you have working mobile data and a usable payment method, DiDi can be convenient because you can enter the destination in advance, see a price estimate, and check the car’s plate number before boarding.

Where is the T5 ride-hailing pickup zone?

The airport introduced a smart pickup area at P5A parking building, Basement Level 1 (B1). Local reporting based on the airport’s announcement described it as about a five-minute walk from domestic arrivals, with digital screens matching license plate numbers to pickup bays.

Follow 网约车 / Ride-hailing signs. P5A B1 is not the same as the taxi rank outside Door 501.

The photo above shows Terminal 5’s general public interior, not the exact P5A boarding bay; follow current airport signage for the actual pickup location.

What will DiDi cost?

For an after-midnight ride to the Bell Tower area, use ¥110–180 per car as a loose budget, not an official fare range. The app may quote less or more based on available drivers, vehicle type and demand.

Before confirming the booking, check:

  • Whether the quote is a fixed-price fare or an estimate.
  • Whether road tolls, parking fees, or waiting fees are included.
  • Whether your payment method is accepted.
  • Whether the pickup point shown in the app is actually P5A B1.

You may be able to use an overseas phone number and an eligible international bank card, depending on the app and account. If this is your first trip to China, set up your connectivity and payment methods before landing. Our guides to getting internet in China and paying with Alipay, WeChat Pay, foreign cards and cash explain the basics.

Never cancel an active DiDi booking simply because a driver offers you a cheaper private cash ride. It removes the transaction from the app’s normal trip record and safeguards.

Before getting in, check the license plate and vehicle details against your booking. If something doesn’t match, don’t enter the car.

4. Airport Bus vs Taxi vs DiDi: Which Would I Actually Choose?

Situation My recommendation Why
Traveling alone with a backpack Night bus Usually much cheaper than a private car
Two people and two large suitcases Taxi or DiDi Split the fare and get closer to the hotel
Three or four travelers Check car capacity, then taxi/DiDi May be good value when shared, but luggage space matters
Phone has no internet or payment app Official taxi No need to finish app setup at 2 a.m.
Night bus has a long wait Compare taxi/DiDi Travel time matters after an overnight flight
Hotel is far from the night bus stop Taxi/DiDi Less walking through unfamiliar streets

Example for two people: If a taxi costs ¥140 in total, that’s ¥70 each. The bus would be about ¥25 each, or ¥50 together, but it could involve waiting, multiple stops and a late-night walk. For a tired couple with heavy bags, that extra convenience may be worth paying for.

5. Six Late-Night Airport Transfer Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Following someone who approaches you in arrivals

A stranger may offer a “special airport car,” quote a price off the meter, or claim the official taxi area is closed. Some services may be legitimate pre-booked transfers, but an unverified person soliciting passengers in the terminal is not the same as an official taxi or an app-confirmed ride.

Typical red flags include an unclear company name, no confirmed booking, unexplained extra charges, and pressure to follow someone away from the signed pickup points.

Mistake 2: Mixing up the taxi, ride-hailing, and bus areas

At T5, these are different systems:

  • Taxi: B1, Door 501, per the airport’s official taxi guide.
  • Ride-hailing: P5A parking building, B1, per the airport’s published smart-pickup announcement.
  • City-bound airport bus: Follow 机场巴士 / Airport Bus signs and confirm the current boarding platform with staff. The airport lists Door 512 for its free inter-terminal shuttle, so do not automatically use that door for the Bell Tower bus.

Mistake 3: Assuming every extra charge is a scam—or that every extra charge is legitimate

Airport taxis can have legitimate overnight meter rates, long-distance surcharges, and tolls. Ride-hailing trips can have clearly stated toll or waiting charges, depending on the order.

Ask what each charge is for, and compare it with the meter, posted tariff, or app receipt. Don’t pay an unexplained “luggage fee” just because a driver demands one.

Mistake 4: Entering “Xi’an Bell Tower” instead of your hotel’s exact address

Xi’an Bell Tower illuminated at night, China
Xi’an Bell Tower illuminated at night: the landmark at the center of the old city. Photo: H2v5o68z / CC0 1.0.

The Bell Tower sits in a busy road junction at the center of the old city. Hotels may be along North Street, South Street, East Street, West Street, or on side lanes. A driver can’t necessarily stop wherever the map pin appears.

Use the exact Chinese hotel name and entrance address. Ask your hotel for a Chinese-language arrival message if its entrance is hard to find. For the exact hotel entrance, use our guide to Amap and other maps in China, and keep your hotel booking confirmation handy.

The airport shuttle also stops at a designated point near the center; don’t assume it will pull up outside your hotel lobby.

Mistake 5: Not checking your payment method before leaving the airport

International visitors can often use Alipay or WeChat Pay with eligible overseas cards for merchant purchases, but some personal payment QR codes and app services may not accept every foreign card.

Keep a backup: a second payment app or bank card, and a modest amount of Chinese yuan in cash. Never send a one-time passcode or payment barcode screenshot to someone offering to “help” with the transfer.

Mistake 6: Losing your receipt or trip record

For taxis, request the printed fapiao. For DiDi, keep the trip record and digital receipt. For airport buses, keep your ticket or payment confirmation.

If there’s a dispute, record the time, route, vehicle plate, and amount before contacting the operator or airport staff. For an immediate safety emergency in mainland China, call 110.

6. What to Do If You Don’t Speak Chinese

You don’t need to hold a fluent conversation with the driver. These ready-to-show phrases will get you through most late-night airport situations.

Show this Chinese What it means
请问去钟楼的机场大巴在哪里乘坐? Where can I catch the airport bus to the Bell Tower?
我想去这个酒店,请看地址。 I’d like to go to this hotel. Please look at the address.
请打表。 Please use the taxi meter.
请问高速费包含在车费里吗? Is the highway toll included in the fare?
我在网约车上车点。 I’m at the ride-hailing pickup area.
请给我发票。 Please give me a receipt.
我不会说中文,请发消息。 I don’t speak Chinese. Please send a message.
请问这是去钟楼的夜宵车吗? Is this the night bus to the Bell Tower?

I also recommend saving three things offline: the hotel name in Chinese, a screenshot of its entrance on a map, and the hotel’s phone number. Even if your eSIM or roaming service stops working, you can show the address to a licensed taxi driver.

7. My Arrival Checklist for Xi’an Airport T5

Before leaving home, save this short checklist:

  • Confirm that your flight arrives at Terminal 5; the airport also has T2 and T3.
  • Save your hotel’s full Chinese name and address, not just “Bell Tower.”
  • Tell your hotel if you may check in after midnight and confirm your room will be held.
  • Set up your mobile data and payment methods, or have RMB cash available.
  • Decide whether your first choice is the ¥25 night bus or a door-to-door ride.
  • At T5, follow the official transport signs; do not follow unsolicited ride sellers.
  • Check the current night bus service number and destination at the airport, because published versions differ.
  • Keep taxi receipts and app trip records until you arrive safely.

If you have a full day ahead after checking in, start slowly. The Bell and Drum Towers and the Muslim Quarter are close by, and our first-timer’s Xi’an travel guide and 2-, 3-, and 4-day Xi’an itineraries can help you decide what to see once you’ve rested.

Final Thoughts: The Easiest Way to Reach the Bell Tower After Midnight

An overnight arrival can make a new city feel more intimidating than it really is. But the decision at Xi’an Airport T5 is straightforward once you know where to look.

For the lowest cost, ask for the night bus to the Bell Tower. For a direct trip with luggage, use the official taxi queue at B1 Door 501. If your phone is ready, book DiDi and walk to the signed P5A B1 pickup area.

Don’t chase a vague promise of a cheap private ride. Keep your hotel’s Chinese address handy, confirm the fare and vehicle, and give yourself a few extra minutes to find the correct pickup area.

Once you’re checked in near the Bell Tower, you can forget the airport logistics and start enjoying Xi’an’s old city, food, and history.

Last reviewed: November 2026. Shuttle numbers, boarding gates, fares, operating hours and pickup arrangements may change. In particular, newer route listings call the post-1:00-a.m. Bell Tower bus “Night Bus Line 3,” while older official airport pages call a similar service “Line 5.” Confirm the route on the day of travel.
